Kai Hong grew up in a small city of China and he spent some time in his grandparents’ in a small town where there were abundant domesticated animals around. He traveled to many big cities to visit local zoos and went back home drawing animals. He then received his BFA in ceramic art from the China Academy of Art in 2008 with the culmination of a group art show in the school gallery. After his graduation, Kai worked in an advertising company designing cartoon characters. During the graphic designing career, he developed his own cartoon character styles. Having worked in the graphic design field for over two years, he decided to get further education in the United States, and came to the Academy of Art University to continue studying ceramics. During his graduate studies, he gradually formed his own unique ceramic language – juxtaposition of serious themes and cartoony techniques.
